Entertainment around Big South Fork
TheatreCumberland County Playhouse is a professional theater serving one of the state’s largest nonprofit entertainment audiences. Established in 1965 by Broadway and Hollywood actor, writer, and producer Paul Crabtree, his wife Mary and the people of Cumberland County and Crossville, TN, the Playhouse offers popular musicals, plays and works rooted in Appalachian heritage.
Three to five different shows play in a “repertory” schedule most weeks of the year. Centrally located between Knoxville, Nashville, and Chattanooga, the Playhouse is a short drive from Dale Hollow, Historic Rugby, Cordell Hull Birthplace, Big South Fork, Pickett State Park, and the famous Jack Daniels Distillery.
Over the years, people from all over America have discovered the Playhouse’s big city excellence at small town prices. In recent years, the company has been among the first independent theaters authorized to produce Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS, and Iraving Berlin’s WHITE CHRISTMAS.
In 2009, the Playhouse presents the Broadway & Hollywood Smash Hit HAIRSPRAY, the holiday favorite IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, plus the modern classic ON GOLDEN POND. A wild and hysterical comedy, THE FOREIGNER, returns as the Playhouse’s most requested revival, and the Civil War comes to life in SHENANDOAH, the warm, funny and dramatic musical based on the James Stewart film. And for the 16th year, SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN combines the great characters of the Sanders Family with traditional Appalachian music, heritage and joyful humor.
